Is this really free?

Yes, for qualified homeowners. California's SGIP program covers the full cost of solar panels and battery storage for eligible households. There are no hidden fees, no monthly payments, and no contracts.

How do I know if I qualify?

Qualification is based on your household income and size. Use our eligibility checker above to see if you meet the income requirements for your county. You can qualify if you are in a duplex, but it might require both parties to provide documentation. Renters can qualify as well if they are in a single-family dwelling, but we will need the landlord involved in the process.

What documents do I need to apply?

You'll need proof of income (such as tax returns, 2 recent paystubs or social security/disability award letter are the most common), and a recent utility bill, and for some utility companies a file called Green Button Data that can be found after logging into your online account. Our team will guide you through gathering all required documents and help ensure your application is complete.

How long does installation take?

Once the State approves your application, it typically takes 6-8 weeks for installation. This includes permitting, scheduling, the actual installation (which usually takes 1-2 days), and final inspection time.

What happens during a power outage?

Your battery system will automatically kick in during an outage, providing backup power to essential circuits in your home. The system is designed to keep critical appliances running, including lights, refrigerator, and other necessities.

Do I need good credit to qualify?

No credit check is required! This program is based solely on income eligibility. Since there are no loans or financing involved, your credit score doesn't matter.

What's included with the system?

Barring any manufacturer shortages, most homes will receive CertainTeed solar panels made in the USA with a 25-year warranty and a Tesla Powerwall, professional installation, all permits and inspections, and system monitoring. Everything needed for a complete, working system is included at no cost.

Is there a waitlist?

The program has limited funding and operates on a first-come, first-served basis. We recommend applying as soon as possible if you're eligible. Applications opened on June 2nd, 2025, and funding will be distributed until exhausted.
